Country Background

Costa Rica is one of the world’s most popular countries for ecotourism.  This small country in Central America draws over an astounding million tourists every year.  Thanks to a varied topography, tourists can take advantage of its pristine beaches and stunning volcanic mountains.  Costa Rica abolished its army on December 1, 1948 and has not had a civil war since. It is a withdrawn from its more turbulent neighbors.  They utilize the extra money on education, healthcare, culture and security.

Costa Rica offers some of the world’s best health care facilities. The World Health Organization rated Costa Rica above the United States in terms of medical care.  This is due to the availability of some of the most highly skilled doctors with the use of the most advanced medical procedures.

Favorable exchange rates have made it convenient for foreign patients to take advantage of their medical care facilities.  Lab costs for both pre and post operative medical care are also quite low in comparison to similar services in the United States and Europe.

Medical Tourism

Due to the close proximity to the United States it is common for many Costa Rican medical practitioners to have studied and been trained in the United States.  These Doctors are certified by the American Medical Board making Americans more confident of receiving quality medical care approved by their home institute.  All doctors are certified by the Costa Rica Medical Board as well before being granted a permit for medical practice.  If you want to verify your doctor’s credentials then you can contact the Costa Rica Medical Board.

Costa Rica is very well known for cosmetic and dental surgeries.  Americans have been traveling for years to Costa Rica for these procedures.  Various complex operations like organ transplants and heart surgeries are also sought after in this country.  Most procedures are performed in hospitals and clinics that import their medical equipment from the USA, where it is FDA approved.  Procedures in Costa Rica can cost substantially less than in the United States and Europe, however they are usually more money than Asia.

The United States and Canadian patients can save money on the flights.  Flights can be as little as 2.5 to 4 hours from various United States cities.  Visas do not cost anything so patients can save money there as well. Costa Rica has greater biodiversity then North America or Europe.  Naturalists come here to look at the 850+ different species of birds in this small country, which is more than Europe, North America or Australia.  Due to the million plus visitors every year, many Costa Ricans can also speak English.  Costa Rica is a great place to get solid, dependable, inexpensive healthcare in a beautiful location.
